Why Social Work...
I chose Social Work because I did not want to be an individual who was dispensing drugs to patients that would one day ruin their lives. While I worked at different Pharmacy's for the course of 6 years, I constantly saw many patients on pain medications which they eventually abused and became dependent on. It seemed like the patients would seek out multiple doctors that they knew would give them whichever medicines they wanted. This eventually lead to the patient's addiction of wanting more and more until finally something would go wrong. I know that the system will not change over night, or even change at all but I want to be a part of the process of change for the better. I hope to one day work as a Substance Abuse Social Worker so can I help these people get better instead of taking a turn for the worse.
I think the WSU School of Social Work's MISSION will definitely help me in developing into the kind of social worker I want to become. I am looking forward to the year long internship at Hegira especially since I get to be involved with substance abuse clients. Overall, I am very excited about being in this program and all it has to offer. I am positive that it will be a fun and interesting two years!
